Djembe Fire Drum Dance Session
In May 2024 we ran an all-day Djembe and Dundun Drumming Workshop in the beautiful village of Youlgreave in Derbyshire!
This workshop focused on the fascinating 'echauffement' rhythm passages in West African djembe and dundun drumming.
For those who don't know, 'echauffement' is the French term for 'warm-up'. In djembe and dundun music, the echauffement (or 'chauff' for short) is a musical passage in the rhythm where there is an increased intensity in the beats, creating a sense of heat and fire in the music.
It is traditionally used for dancers in a cultural village rhythm event where dancers come into a circle and interact with the drums.

In this video, I show you a step-by-step guide to playing the Malian 'Sunu' djembe pattern. Like the classic 'Djembe Populaire' rhythm, the Sunu pattern has lots of special hand coordination techniques which provide a great foundation for tackling more challenging phrases in the future. In the process of nailing this pattern, we will have some fun by using the Quincy Jones' 'Soul Bossa Nova' (a...

Djembe drum soloing with Dunduns
Просмотров 802 месяца назад
The first solo phrases inspired by Jeremy Tomasck solo to Nunaka (www. djembe-videos.com). The dunduns play Musolu (source Babara Bangoura). I’m trying to take phrases and think about how they are placed within a dundun pattern. Enjoy! Babara Bangoura originally described Musolu as a rhythm played in naming ceremonies. It is also a beautiful song. It is very similar to the Mamaya Djagbe rhythms...
Beginners Djembe Drum 'Ice Cream' Rhythm
Просмотров 2772 месяца назад
This rhythm is one of my favourite groove patterns, as it creates a nice sense of momentum when played alongside other patterns which play on the beat. It is loosely inspired by Senegal rhythms such as the Mbalax rhythm from Sabba drumming. In the video, I use a silly 'ice cream' chant to help grab the feeling of the beat. I also break the rhythm into parts so you can focus on the different tec...

@@phillipdridge9775 don’t eat them first!
Ps Grsat video and Rythums ❤
I want to be able to play the DunDuns. I struggle so hard to get both hands working independently of each other. Ie, Bell and drum. ❤
@@phillipdridge9775 hi Philip, learning the dunduns is such a great way to develop your understanding of djembe. I think k the part that can get overlooked is the bell patterns. They are often seen merely as filler but they are seen by many djembe Folas as the heart of the music (in the same way as clave is quite literally (translates as) the key to Afro Cuban music. Yes coordinating the two takes time. Philip have you looked at Djembe-Videos.com? This site is absolutely amazing and they provide a whole area in their site to developing dundun technique.
Can we have a longer version, at the correct speed to play along with now please. ❤❤❤
I could certainly add this at a later date. However in the short term I’m going into mad summer workshop season so wouldn’t be able to provide immediately. Have you tried using a metronome (an electronic one) and have it blue toothed to a small speaker. You can then set the speeds and have it faster the more confident you get. There are lots of apps. I use MetroTimer. Using a mean robotic timing device is a very good way of improving your timing. All the best Philip and thank you for your kind feedback!
@unbeatableenergy Thank you, yes I have a couple of metronome apps, that I use. It's the only way to practice, and will be using that in the mean time, thank you for the video's Steve. ❤❤
Thank you for this video. Do know it has been extremely insperational for me. And yes, I will be practising this, this evening. ❤❤❤
That’s great to hear. Do get in touch if you need any help. Happy practising 😊
Thank you, Steve. Very appreciated. 👌
That was wonderful! Well done! 🎉
Thank you 🙏 glad you enjoyed it

Great, thanks from a begnner.
Excellent. Fantastic energy 💪👌✌️💥
❤❤❤
It’s called Nunaka. I’ll be teaching g it soon in an all day workshop on 19th May in Derbyshire, UK. Are you uk based? Would you like to come?
I live in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire 👍🏾
Where about in Derbyshire ?
@@surdogal Youlgreave.
@@surdogal hi there, here are the details of the workshop: goteamup.com/p/1907796-unbeatable-energy-ltd/e/71068397-djembe-fire-all-day-workshop/ You will need a minimum of 6 months experience of regular djembe playing and have a basic understanding of djembe technique. If you are a complete starter do get in touch and I can advise on my classes or alternative teachers for your location. Or if you are already a djembe player it would be lovely for you to join us. Best wishes Steve Rivers
@@surdogal that’s not too far away. I have some friends coming up from Halesowen.
Hi, does this wonderful rhythm have a name ?
Hi there, just checking you got my last message. Do you need help booking in. I sent a link before in comments to book place. Or you can email me and communicate that way.
It looks and sounds great fun.
Thanks Mich! Regarding your query about tuning. It might be best to contact me via website. Ring me and I’ll explain a little more about djembe care and what you need to look for. Phone details on my website site contact page. Web address on my channel banner.
Fantastic! Where is the best place to get one of those drums?
You can try Knock On Wood. Prices range between £150-£400. Can find second drums on internet. Needs good tuning.
@@unbeatableenergy Thank you. Do you tune the yourself or someone else?
Very helpfu. Thank you!
This playlist is fabulous for a beginner like me. I stop and start the videos to help my brain and hands get the hang of it, and then play along with Steve. I get the point that a bit longer for the videos would be good to get the feel of accompanying Steve, but the playlist certainly works for me.
yes it can..
😊
Very creative
You need to add the swing to that djembe part…The swing is what makes Sunu rock
👍
True true my friend!
Very clear instruction, thank you
You are welcome 🙏
Super !
Thank you for the tutorials this is very beautiful and very easy to understandable. I am also percussionist. I play the north Indian percussion instrument called Tabla. One percussionist to another you are doing great job
Hey thanks for the kind words! I love the tabla and have a lot of respect for the time and dedication of tabla musicians. Such a beautiful instrument!
I'm digging these lessons a lot. I appreciate you showing us techniques and rhythms and chops and rudiments in clear and concise short bit size pieces. Excellent. Subscribed.
That’s great to hear Matt. I’m so pleased the videos are useful for you. Do you practise with a local drumming group?
@@unbeatableenergy yes, we have a few people that gather once a month in New Jersey, US. I'm gonna study some of your videos. Thx, good stuff!
I would have like to have both of these variation benn palyed a little longer to get into them.
This one was a bit trickier. It might help if you explained at teh beginning in slow motions where the extra beats come in. I worked it out after a while though.
Thanks for the feedback and yes slowmo would be a good idea for next time. If you are a beginner don’t get too stuck with using Grace notes as they can hinder your technique. Concentrate on the actual beats of the rhythm aiming to create good contrast between tone and slap. Grace notes are best if they are allowed to naturally occur as a rhythm and pulse gets to a state of motor memory. Have fun 🤩
The way you 'stagger' and gradually add more and more complexity makes it to easy to follow! And I like the 3 minute length of the practice. It takes a while to find the rhythm and then it kind of carries you.
Thank you! This was exactly my aim in this series.
Very useful video, excited to follow the next one.
This a great easy play-along youtube to get into the rhythm of playing. Thanks so much!
Thanks and I’m really pleased it’s been useful. Do share the video with other drummers! 🪘
I've been drumming with Steve since 2018. He's an excellent and inspiring teacher as well as being an awesome drummer. Easy Grooves classes are always fun and uplfting. A little slice of djembe heaven every thursday!.
Abuelo caruso 😂
So you can use your freedom of choice to mix and match, and then just whip it?
Great technique and execution

This is cool! Can you teach me to facilitate my own basic workshops in my community? It's so needed for unity
Gosh! Where to start! The first thing I would recommend is. Ito g the book by Arthur Hull called Drum Circle Spirit. Best wishes Steve Rivers

Thank you for your comment Susie. Great to know the video was useful. Yes I have more on their way! Best wishes Steve
What a brilliant idea - so generous of you to share 😊
That was nice
Thanks Amn, it’s inspired by Jola palm stick playing in Gambia and Senegal. Difference is they are far better and there is about 100+ people all going in fast syncopation with each other! It’s deafening and also AMAZING. You can hear them for miles late at night.
Glad you like it! More on their way 😀

Pure Mustard. Fabulous ❤❤❤
Thanks Phillip - I love mustard! 😊
Hi Steve, one of our Jubaloo tracks came up on my playlist, and I wondered what had happened to Mr Dramay… don’t forget we also played at a football match - I want to say Hillsborough but I’m doubting myself now! I remember Ruth but struggling with other names of our gang
Wow! Blast from the past - and a coincidence as I was just watching this video. It was United not Owls - I didn’t have any footage of that one. I have the full video of Tudor Square and I think I can edit it better now. Let’s catch up - maybe outside RUclips. Email me via my website. It was would lovely to catch up. Best wishes Steve (‘Dramay’ wasn’t a catchy name 😂)
Well it sure does drum!
Thanks Void, I’m really enjoying finding the Samba sound in random ‘throw away’ objects. Enjoy!
